TMHS Boys Topple Cordova in Tip Off Tourney

Juneau, Alaska (KINY) - The Thunder Mountain Falcons boys basketball team defeated 3A Cordova 65-28 in an elimination game at the 41st Annual Service Cougar Tip Off Tournament at Service High School on Friday.

“We came with a defensive focus to start the game,” TMHS coach John Blasco said. “Created some layup opportunities early and were able to jump out to a quick lead. That led to the guys feeling good and playing together.”

The Falcons jumped out to a 25-8 first quarter advantage behind red hot sophomore Thomas Baxter who scored 14 points in the stanza.

“Everyone got involved,” Blasco said. “Sam (Lockhart) and Thomas lead us point wise. Nice to see Wallace (Adams) get going with some strong post moves. Nice guard play from Isaiah (Nelson) and Matthew Johns.”

For the second game in the young season sophomore Lockhart led the Falcons in the scorebook, earning 22 points, including six points in each of the second and third quarters.

The Falcons led 44-11 at the half and 57-13 after three quarters of action.

Baxter totaled 16 points for the Falcons, senior Adams 10, sophomore James Polasky seven, senior Matthew Hartsock four, seniors Johns and Nelson and sophomore Lance Nierra two each.

“Cordova didn’t get to have a season last year,” Blasco said. “They played really hard and clearly enjoyed the game.”

Asa Carter led Cordova with 10 points, James Corales eight, Floyd Writse five, Xavier Russian three and Vincent Nothshine two.

The Falcons face Nome Saturday for their final game. The Falcons had lost to Chugiak on Thursday, 52-49.
