Juneau, Alaska (KINY) - Three of the Juneau Capitals club hockey teams took to the traveling ice over the past weeks, with two of the three squads capturing state championships.

“When the kids are having fun, trusting each other and coming together as a team, it is pretty hard to beat them,” Capitals coach Mike Bovitz said.

Bovitz, with assistant John Bohan, oversaw the 18-and-under team in their championship win at Tok, March 12-14; and with assistants Dave Kovach and Jarrod Sowa, the 14-and-under championship at Kenai last weekend.

Bovitz said the players work hard and cited the importance of a support group of parents and volunteers.

The 14-and-under team opened with 48 shots on goal in a 7-0 win over the Fairbanks Grizzlies and faced their strongest test in a semifinal against Hockey Club Fairbanks. Leading 3-0, the Capitals gave up two goals 45 seconds apart in the first two minutes against HCF.

“We had to call time out just to get them to come back and focus on what they do as a team,” Bovitz said “We reminded them about their resilience and trust in each other. They have learned that when they are having fun their natural skills will come out.”

The Capitals 16-and-under team, coached by Jason Kohlhase and Kevin Hanson, played at Wasilla last week. Bovitz said the team was younger “but developed and got stronger each game.”

“Although they did not win a game, competitiveness will lead to future success down the road,” he said. “There is not one player on either one of these teams that I could single out. They are a team. We tell them the game is fast and teach them that a split second on the ice is a game changer and that is how they play.”
