Juneau, Alaska (KINY) - The Juneau-Douglas High School Yadaa.at Kalé Crimson Bears boys soccer team will play their first games of the season at Thunder Mountain tonight at 7 p.m. (JV action is at 5:15).
“I am looking forward to hopefully playing some games, unlike last year, and just getting some fun in and getting to play other people,” JDHS senior Zachary Stagg said. “I am liking that we are getting a lot of touches in, surprisingly with all this snow. We have been practicing hard and getting a lot of practices in, more than we used to. We have a lot of young players that are doing really well, that is nice to see them grow and get better than they were at the beginning of the year, which is already pretty good.”
The Crimson Bears have just four seniors and Juneau-Douglas coach Gary Lehnhart said it is hard to know just what his players will bring to the field this season.
"It has been two years since they have played," Lehnhart said. "Virtually all of the players we are relying on have never played a varsity game."
Senior Tim Dadinger said he has been liking how coach Lehnhart has been able to pull together all the players “to really make this season happen during COVID despite the restrictions in place and how he has been able to keep everyone safe and keep us active.”
“I think what Gary has really pushed this year, more than other years, is connection between grades and teamwork and he has helped us bring up the younger players and players that just did not have a freshmen year are sophomores and he has helped incorporate them into our team and they are playing amazingly,” he said.
The Thunder Mountain Falcons have two wins on their home pitch this season, beating Ketchikan 7-0 and 3-1. So far this season the Falcons have shown an attacking and possessing offense with a talented scoring trio of senior Logan Miller, and juniors Wallace Adams and Talon Briggs.
