World-renowned Spiritual Guru Visiting Juneau in July

JUNEAU, Alaska (AP) — A world-famous spiritual leader is bringing his mediation practices to Juneau in hopes of teaching locals how to live stress- and violence-free lives.

The Juneau Empire reports 1,000 followers are expected to arrive in Juneau to take part in Sri Sri Ravi Shankar's group mediations at Juneau-Douglas High School later this month.

Forbes Magazine has called Shankar the fifth most powerful person in India.

Shankar's Juneau visit is part of a West Coast tour that includes San Francisco and Seattle.

A nonprofit education and humanitarian organization founded by Shankar, The Art of Living Foundation, is also planning workshops in Juneau in September.

Foundation Organizer Sara Fix says the foundation has been teaching classes in Fairbanks for three years.

She says the foundation plans to stay involved in Juneau.
