Winter storm leaves some stranded without power in Interior Alaska

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) — The National Guard is helping evacuate people from Interior Alaska after snow and ice left some people stranded and without power.

In a statement, the Alaska National Guard says it began evacuations from the Fairbanks North Star Borough on Friday. Extreme weather conditions could get worse over the weekend.

The National Weather Service issued a winter weather advisory through Saturday.

The National Guard teams use six-passenger trucks with chains and small support vehicles. It is using an Army Arctic all-terrain tracked vehicle that can carry about 15 people.

The National Weather Service says snow and ice will continue in Interior Alaska through the night and will taper off Saturday.
