Voters could decide fate of legislative sessions

Juneau, Alaska (KINY) Yet another effort will be made to move state legislative debates out of Juneau.

Alaskans may get to vote again whether to move legislative sessions out of Juneau.  The group Equal Access Alaska file with the Alaska Public Offices Commission over the weekend to launch a ballot initiative.  They said the want to provide more government access to Alaskans by having the legislature meet closer to the center of the population.  The group is not seeking to name a new capital city.

If the petition gets enough signatures the initiative will be on the 2020 ballot.  Alaskans rejected a legislative move initiative in 2002 by a wide 2-1 margin.  A bill to move sessions out of Juneau was introduced in 2015 but did not get much support from lawmakers.
