Update: Southeast Conference responds to federal funding for mariculture facility in the region

Southeast Conference Executive Director Robert Venables

Juneau, Alaska (KINY) - The Southeast Conference will oversee the use of a half-million dollars from U. S. Department of Agriculture to create a blueprint for a mariculture processing facility on Prince of Wales Island in Southeast Alaska.

That announcement came from the department Thursday.

Southeast Conference Executive Director Robert Venables was asked what the funding will enable them to do.  "It is a game-changing opportunity to be able to move a facility designed to for workforce construction funding while the infrastructure dollars are still available.  This funding will allow us to do the community and stakeholder engagement.  It will allow us to nail down the actual land site, take care of utilities and right of way planning, and get it fully designed for construction bidding  next year."

The timeline for completion of the project is 18 months, but Venables says they wanted to accelerate the timeline to ensure funding remains available.
