University of Alaska President Pat Pitney

Juneau, Alaska (KINY) - University of Alaska President Pat Pitney told the Juneau Chamber of Commerce today (Thursday) that she sees an exciting opportunity in marine biology and fisheries for the University of Alaska Southeast.

"The place-based nature of the University of Alaska Southeast and that consolidation of fisheries management and the unique location of the campus and the interest of the community are all very aligned in that fisheries - marine biology - ocean sciences space," she said.

She asked how can they create a hub with all those resources. You said she was happy to report that UAS Chancellor Karen Carey is working with NOAA, the University of Fairbanks fisheries program, and beginning that process of elevating and attracting a more fisheries presence..  She added that that's one that they'll want to do in conjunction with the community.

Pitney called it a huge economic opportunity for Juneau to capitalize on what already exists and build on it.
