Juneau, Alaska (KINY) The jobless rate rose from 4.6 in September to 4.7 percent in October in Juneau.
Alaska's total employment fell 1.3 percent over the past year, a loss of about 4,100 jobs. Oil and gas employment was down 7.8 percent, construction 7.2 percent, health care two percent, and local government by 0.2 percent. Federal government jobs fell by 1.3 percent and state of Alaska government by two percent in the past year.
Alaska’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate of 7.2 percent in October was unchanged from the prior two months
but higher than last October, when it was 6.6 percent. The comparable national rate for October was 4.1 percent.
Alaska’s not-seasonally adjusted rate was 6.7 percent, up one-tenth of a percentage point from September, which is
typical in the fall. Unemployment rates were up in 21 of 29 boroughs and census areas, with notable increases in areas
dependent on tourism. The largest increases were in Skagway and the Denali Borough.
Unemployment rates fell in six boroughs and census areas and stayed the same in two. Unemployment rates fell around
half a percentage point in each of the three areas in the Northern Region: the Nome Census Area, North Slope Borough,
and Northwest Arctic Borough.
The jobless rates in the southeast region stood at 6.2 percent in October, up from 5.4 percent in September and 5.6 percent in October, 2016.
Juneau had a jobless rate of 4.3 percent last October.
Hoonah Angoon reported 12.5 percent, Ketchikan 6.2 percent, Petersburg 8.0 percent, Prince of Wales 10.8 percent, Sitka 4.8 percent, Skagway 13.5 perent, Wrangell 7.2 percent and Yakutat 10 percent in October.
