UAS facing an eight percent budget reduction

Juneau, Alaska (KINY) - University of Alaska Southeast Chancellor Rick Caulfield talked about budget challenges the institution of higher learning faces while a guest on Action Line Wednesday.

He said the  University's Board of Regents  approved a budget request of $341 Million during its annual meeting earlier this month. The budget request was sent to the Governor and is under review by the Office of Management and Budget.

Caulfield says the UAS share is about $25 Million which is a decrease of about eight percent from the previous year.

The chancellor said dealing with the reduction in funding has been a big challenge.  He said they have cut back on administrative staff.  In addition, tuition will increase by five percent in each of the next two years.  He said the hope is that the tuition increases will allow the university to stay on a steady course.

The chancellor added that the university's budget has been pared by  $61 Million over the past four years
