Juneau, Alaska (KINY) - There's a new development to report in the effort by the CBJ Docks and Harbors Department to purchase the Juneau Fisheries Terminal between Aurora and Harris Harbors from the University of Alaska Southeast.
Port Director Carl Uchytil said on Action Line that the university has extended the lease until May of next year. He said the Assembly will at some point consider whether they can support purchasing the property. Otherwise, he said his team will be working with the local government's finance director to determine what might be available in revenue bond funding. "The worse case scenario would be is that we would just end up continuing to lease at about a quarter million dollars which is up from $15,000 a year that we paid for the last 33 years. So it goes up considerably."
The lease cost between now and May will remain at $15,000, according to Uchytil. He said the lease renewal puts the amount at $230,000 a year for the next 33 years.
The port director said the university is asking $2.89 Million. He said they figured out they would be better off doing a revenue bond over 15 years to purchase the property.
"The Assembly understands the plight and the value of that area and the value the boat yard and the cranes provide to our commercial fishermen. They want to be supportive", he said.
