Sitka, Alaska (KINY) - Two Sitka residents have filed to run for the City and Borough of Sitka Assembly.
The two, Leo Jimmy and Steve Lee, are running for two open three-year-term seats on the body.
Jimmy moved to Sitka in 2012 and began his time there working at Sitka Tribe of Alaska and eventually moved over to Sitka Tribal Enterprises. He currently works as the building attendant at the Community House and also at the Chamber of Commerce.
In his candidate statement, Jimmy said the most important issues to him are, "Opioid issue, drugs and alcohol, and mental health issues."
Jimmy said he is also an advocate for homeless issues.
Lee has lived in Alaska for seven years and previously resided in Juneau. He is currently a patient housing clerk at SEARHC.
"We need to change the narrative," Lee said in his candidate statement. "We must become a city that allows new and small businesses to be successful. This starts with our City’s leadership, and if elected I plan to lead the charge through a collaborative effort with our residents."
The filing period closes at 5 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 7.
