Troopers face man with body armor, assault rifle

Palmer, Alaska (KINY) Troopers who tried to serve an arrest warrant for an earlier domestic violence incident got more than they bargained for.

A dispatch from Alaska State Troopers said Gregory Smith, 32, of Palmer, came to the front door wearing body armor and holding a semi-automatic rifle.  The Troopers shut down traffic in the neighborhood and waited out the suspect.  The dispatch reported that there were several shots fired by the suspect inside the home during the incident.

The standoff ended four hours later when Smith came out of the home unarmed and surrendered Wednesday.  Charges are pending in the incident.
