Troopers allege Kwethluk man fired at village police officer

Kwethluk, Alaska (AP) - A 19-year-old Kwethluk man is in custody after troopers say he staged several rifles inside the local public safety building, activated the village fire alert system and fired on a village police officer, authorities said Monday.

Troopers say in a release Bryan Nicolai was being held without bail at the jail in Bethel after the Saturday incident. Online court records did not list any charges against Nicolai on Monday.

Troopers say after he got inside the building, he broke into the village public safety officer’s office and put on a ballistic vest and helmet and staged several rifles.

When an officer approached, troopers say he aimed a rifle and pulled the trigger but the weapon didn’t fire. He went to grab another gun while the officer ran for cover, troopers say. They allege he shot multiple times in the general direction of the officer with the other rifle.

A community member with a rifle arrived on scene and talked Nicolai into surrendering, troopers say. Troopers have recommended Nicolai face attempted murder, weapons misconduct, and other charges.
