Tribes to operate park

Sitka, Alaska (KINY) The Sitka Tribe will operate programs on Tlingit culture at the state park starting this summer.

The Daily Sitka Sentinel reported that Sitka National Historic Park and the tribe will jointly operate the visitor center, interpretation and education programs.

It is believed to be the first partnership of its kind in the country.

Tribe General Manager Lisa Gassman said it is important that the tribe have some ownership over the presentation of Tlingit culture and history to the public.

Angie Richman, Sitka National Historical Park director of visitor services, said she views the partnership as valuable to the services offered at the Sitka park.
