Treadwell Arena set for 'soft' opening next week

Juneau, Alaska (KINY) - Treadwell Arena is set for a soft opening next week to core user groups like youth hockey and local skating clubs.

The opening is set for July 29 to specific groups and for rentals only. The majority of use will be for youth hockey and skating clubs.

Arena manager Lauren Anderson told News of the North that the arena won't be open for public skating just yet, but she hopes it will soon.

Anderson says this year's opening is far different than year's past, which involved civic, business and public participation.

All users of the arena must arrive dressed to use it as the locker rooms will be closed. The water fountain and concessions will also remain closed.

There will be reduced customer and staff contact. Socially-distanced single seating will be available for skate tying, and benches have been removed and replace with 30 individual plastic chairs marked six feet apart.

There will also be six-foot floor markings at the front window and skate window.

Masks will be required per city ordinance.
