Juneau, Alaska (KINY) - An 1000-foot section of the Auk Nu trail is receiving improvements this month through a partnership between the Tongass National Forest’s Juneau Ranger District and Trail Mix, Inc.

The Auk Nu trailhead is located on Glacier Highway near Auke Bay and is used to access the John Muir Cabin in Spaulding Meadows. According to Trail Mix, this popular cabin continues to be one of the highest-use cabins on the Forest and is a valuable year-round recreation facility.

"Public use cabins are the go-to places to celebrate special moments and bring visiting family and friends,” said Ryan O’Shaughnessy, Executive Director of Trail Mix. “By improving the Auk Nu trail, we are increasing accessibility for this popular cabin that our community uses year-round.”

The 3.5 mile trail gains 1,500 feet in elevation to the cabin and has received several upgrades in recent years. This cooperative project received Great American Outdoor Act funding in partnership with Trail Mix, Inc.

“The agreement between the Forest Service and Trail Mix provides for a wonderful opportunity to stretch our funding and more efficiently meet the needs of our active recreation community here in Juneau,” according to Pete Schneider, Recreation Program Manager for the Juneau Ranger District. “We are excited to squeeze this project in before the season wraps up.”

Work on the trail commenced the last week of August and is expected to be completed by the end of September.

Trail Mix said hikers and cabin users will still have access during construction but are asked to watch out for the hand crews making improvements.

In addition, there may also be short-term helicopter operations to move materials along the trail. Trail guards and signage are planned to be in place to notify users when air operations are occurring.
