Tourism support addressed in Governors race

Juneau, Alaska (KINY) The three main candidates for Alaska Governor all vowed to use car rental taxes to help promote Alaska tourism.

The Alaska Travel Industry Association held their annual convention in Fairbanks and hosted a forum for the three major candidates for Governor.

President of Travel Juneau John McConnachie was in attendance.  He said all three vowed to support tourism, "Money for marketing the whole state of Alaska has been rather minimal due to budget cuts.  All three candidates at the convention committed to placing the vehicle rental tax into the marketing budget for the state which is about $12 million."

McConnachie added that having the three candidates no record saying that is wonderful, "It is a steady stream of revenue that will help market Alaska to the rest of the nation and throughout the world."

The ATIA plans to bring the convention to Juneau next year.  The event would attract between 600 and 700 people and provide an economic impact of around $450,000.

McConnachie said this will be a nice boost to the restaurants, hotels, and shops in the community during the second week of October, 2019.
