Haines, Alaska (KINY) A 10 year plan to harvest over 13,000 acres of timber will be the focus of a meeting in Haines Thursday.
An open house with the State Division of Forestry, the Department of Natural Resources, and the University of Alaska
will be held April 26th to discuss the Haines timber sale. It will be held at the Chilkat Center.
The University extended the comment period for the timber sale after a large turnout at the Borough Assembly meeting on April 3.
Borough Manager Debra Schnabel said they sent a letter that asked to be involved in the process, "We are asking to be recognized as a stakeholder. They have gotten together and made a pronouncement that they will log the 10 year contract. It is a total of 150 million board feet."
Schnabel said there will be huge impacts should the proposal become reality, "The proposal would be over 10 years. That is 15 million board feet per year. That is about three times of the annual allowable cut on the state forest. It is huge."
Schnabel said she would like to see businesses in Haines benefit from this project.
