THRHA receives major Native housing grant

Juneau, Alaska (KINY) - The Tlingit-Haida Regional Housing Authority has been awarded a $750,000 grant from the Federal Home Loan Bank.

The funds from this grant will be leveraged with matching funds from the Native American Housing Assistance and Self Determination Act, Indian Community Development Block Grant, and Alaska Housing Finance Corporation to support housing rehabilitation for homeowners.

“This grant award will provide the Housing Authority with funding to help us renovate up to thirty owner-occupied homes in our partner communities,” said Interim President & CEO Joyce Niven. “We estimate the total cost of these projects to be up to $1.5 million so this grant helps us greatly in meeting our home renovation project goals.”

Rehabilitation projects and activities may include increasing energy efficiency, eliminating environmental hazards, accessibility improvements, or safety upgrades. The funding will be available to all twelve partner communities that THRHA serves which include Angoon, Craig, Douglas, Juneau, Kake, Kasaan, Klawock, Petersburg, Saxman, Skagway, Wrangell, and Yakutat.

“Another element of the grant will enable us to directly provide empowerment services to project beneficiaries through financial literacy and sustainability training,” said Niven.

THRHA applied for the grant with the assistance of First Bank.

The program will be managed through THRHA’s Department of Construction Management. For those interested in applying, applications and eligibility guidelines will be available at the THRHA office in Juneau or on the website at regionalhousingauthority.org.
