Threat of avalanches increased

Juneau, Alaska (KINY) - The Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities urged motorists and residents along Thane Road to be alert this afternoon and tonight.

Officials said the high wind conditions and heavy snowfall at higher elevations are causing an increase in the avalanche threat.

Residents and motorists are asked to obey posted warning signs on Thane Road.  They also advise motorists to not stop or park in an avalanche danger zone.

The DOT said they will not be able to safely remove the avalanche debris should it reach the road until the hazard decreases.

Thane residents are told to be prepared for extended road closures.

The DOT will continue to monitor the situation closely.
