Thane Road closure on Tuesday ended to make way for parasailers

Juneau, Alaska (KINY) - Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (DOT&PF) planned a closure of Thane Road on Tuesday to reduce avalanche hazards so AEL&P could work on their transmission lines. They had to stop to make way for parasailers who were also taking advantage of the nice weather.

"They were going to continue operations but some parasailers jumped off of Mount Roberts and the crew determined it was unsafe," said Sam Dapcevich, from DOT&PF. "Possibly for the parasailers if they came over by the area where the explosions were taking place and the potential avalanche, and also it was unsafe for the helicopter to be operating in proximity to the parasailers."

He said they used explosives to attempt to clear hazards but only got a few small releases before they had to stop. "They weren't able to bring down what they needed to," said Dapcevich. There is a weather system forecasted for this weekend, but Dapcevich said they will schedule another road closure once it passes through.

In the meantime, he said to not stop while driving down Thane Road while the avalanche hazard persists.
