Thane road closed due to avalanche hazard

Juneau, Alaska (KINY) - The Department of Transportation closed the Thane road Sunday.

The road was closed at the avalanche gates Sunday at 1:30 p.m. due to high avalanche hazard to the roadway.

DOT says the avalanche hazard is expected to remain high overnight and into Monday.

This emergency closure will be re-evaluated Monday at 8:00 a.m.

Meanwhile, the Avalanche hazard advisory in Juneau is high.

Emergency Programs Manager, Tom Mattice, wrote in his Sunday report that with Sunday snowstorm volumes during warming to the point of freezing on top of the cold hard bed surface that are in place, expect to see natural avalanches Sunday as they have transitioned to high avalanche danger throughout the region.

Natural avalanches are likely Sunday and human-triggered avalanches are more than likely, according to Mattice.

"Please be safe out there today and recognize dangers are high and building. Expect to see avalanches over the next 48 hours," he wrote.
