Juneau, Alaska (KINY) - The Alaska DOT said the avalanche did come onto the road but is not considered serious.
Spokesperson Sam Dapcevich said it is not known how long the road will be closed.
Avalanche experts decided to close the road because the risk is high and several smaller avalanches have come down today.
High winds at high elevations canceled the mitigation work there planned for today.
"They weren't going to be able to use the equipment they use suspended from the helicopter," he added.
"It wasn't a lot of snow, but now that it is starting to come down, the risk is too high for operators to be out there. They will close the road until the risk subsides."
Dapcevich said there was no report of vehicles or people being affected by this avalanche.
