Teachers under stress

Juneau, Alaska (KINY) A survey of 60 Juneau teachers found most are under a high level of stress.

The Juneau Education Association urged formation of a working group to tackle teacher stress.

Carole Bookless said one teacher made a comment about high blood pressure and they decided to conduct the survey.  "I found it really surprising and kind of sad that one quarter of the teachers, about half of the 60 surveyed, have considered leaving the job of teacher due to stress and conditions of being a teacher."

She said the biggest reasons are a lack of planning time and unruly students.

Bookless said the district should try somethings with exercise, gym or pool memberships and wellness to encourage teachers

60 percent of the staff replied from all the schools and grade levels.
