Suspect held in Mall fire

Juneau, Alaska (KINY) A restroom suffered about $5,000 in damage Tuesday evening at the Mendenhall Mall.

Capital City Fire Rescue responded just before 5:30 pm and found smoke and flames coming from the restroom.

Fire Marshall Dan Jager said the small fire was quickly extinguished and ventilation fans were used to remove smoke and odor from the building.

Video footage of the area was reviewed and shortly afterward a suspect was apprehended.

The fire was contained to the restroom.    There was some disruption to other businesses but no injuries were reported.

The Fire Marshal said the investigation into the blaze continues.

Lt. Krag Campbell said police would not release the name of the suspect.  He was identified as a 42-year-old Juneau resident.  He was detained and questioned and officers determined he was suffering from a mental health condition.  He was brought to Bartlett Regional Hospital for treatment.

Criminal charges will be determined by the District Attorney's Office.
