State wells being tested

Gustavus, Alaska (KINY) The Department of Environmental Conservation is testing private water wells near the airport.

The Alaska Department of Transportation has notified nearby residents and have hired a contractor to help the state test the drinking water.  The ADOT operates the Gustavus Airport.

The DEC said potentially hazardous chemicals known as PFAS, or poly-fluoro-alykl substances, most likely come from firefighting foam.  The chemicals have been found in two wells on the south side of the airport.  One level was higher than the DEC action level.
