State to reopen welfare office

Sitka, Alaska (KINY) The state Department of Health and Social Services' Division of Public Assistance plan to reopen an office in Sitka in the next three months.

The office was closed last September due to state budget cuts.  Two of the office staff left and the state made a decision to close the office rather than fill the vacant positions.  It was a busy office as it assisted up to 40 people each day.

The Daily Sitka Sentinel reported the division is currently working on hiring employees.  Once hired, they must go through mandatory training.

Meanwhile the state has no plan to reopen an office they closed last year in Kozebue.
