State spelling bee champ spells out her win on Capital Chat

Spelling bee champ Ishita Khiani with her trophy and coordinator and teacher Electra Gardinier

Juneau, Alaska (KINY) - Juneau is home to the Alaska Spelling Bee champion.

"This is amazing and I feel really proud," said Ishita Khiani while a guest on Capital Chat.

The 7th-grade student at Dzantik'i Heeni Middle School says the competition was conducted virtually which she initially found complicated until she figured it out.  She's looking forward to how it's been conducted in the past which will be the case during the national competition.

Her coordinator is D-Z Teacher Electra Gardinier who said it's a really big deal for a 7th grader to win.  She said it's usually a competition won by an 8th grader.  To win at a statewide level is really impressive, she added.

The next step is regional competition where Ishita will do all the preliminary rounds virtually from Juneau in June and then hopefully it's off to the national competition.

The national competition is scheduled for Thursday, July 8 in the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex at the Walt Disney World Resort near Orlando, Florida.
