State senator diagnosed with breast cancer

Juneau, Alaska (KINY) -Palmer Senator Shelly Hughes says she has breast cancer.

That’s according to an Alaska Dispatch News report after Hughes made that known

Tuesday afternoon on Facebook.  She explained she wanted to get in front of the rumor mill.

She still doesn’t know the extent of the cancer although preliminary indications are promising, she says.

Hughes was elected to the Senate last year.  She was appointed to the House in May of 2012 following the death of Representative Carl Gatto.  She was elected later that year and re-elected in 2014.

She was planning to return to Juneau Wednesday for the special session Thursday.
