Southeast Conference opens Wednesday

    Ketchikan, Alaska (KINY) Politics and elections figure to take center stage at the 60th annual Southeast Conference Meetings.

    Highlights will be some debates in the races for Governor Wednesday and the state legislature on Thursday.  Governor Bill Walker also speaks Wednesday morning.  The Gubernatorial forum luncheon will feature Walker, and challenges, Sen. Mark Begich, and Sen. Mike Dunleavy.

    The legislator's leaders forum Thursday at 2:30 pm will feature races of interest in the southeast.  Candidates scheduled to appear to include Senator Bert Stedman, really. Jonathan Kreiss-Tomkins, Rep. Dan Ortiz, Chris Dimond, Sara Hannan, Trevor Shaw, Richard Wein.

    There will be presentations about education, energy, the timber industry, mining, and transportation and the Alaska Marine Highway system.  There will also be presentations on energy projects, from the University of Alaska Southeast, the maritime industry, the Central Council Tlingit & Haida Indian Tribes, and Alaska Airlines.
