Sitka Presbyterian Church to close

Sitka, Alaska (KINY) The First Presbyterian Church in Sitka has decided to close its doors.

The Daily Sitka Sentinel reported dwindling church membership and the host costs of maintaining the aging building were the major factors in the decision to close.  The church was built in 1958.

The church plans to join with the Northwest coast Presbytery and be a fellowship instead of a congregation.  The church is expected to close before September 30.  They will consider the buildings future at that time.

Church leaders do plan to hold a pot luck to celebrate the legacy and history of the church.
