Sitka Police Release more Details on Shooting

    Sitka, Alaska (KINY) - It was a stressful night in Sitka on Saturday as police arrested a man for a shooting and then dealt with a mistaken report of a man with a gun at a local school.

    Sitka Police arrested Nathan Leask, 35, on charges of first degree assault and fourth degree assault after he allegedly shot a man on board a commercial fishing vessel at Eliason Harbor. The report said the man was armed, got on the boat, and got into a fight with the male victim. The victim was shot once in the thigh and also received blunt force trauma to the head. Leask then fled the scene on foot.

    He was later located at a residence in Sitka and arrested without incident. He was held on $100,000 bond. 

    Meanwhile, a Sitka Police officer was approached by a citizen who reported that a man with a gun was in the pool area at Blatchley Middle School. All officers responded, evacuated and searched the school. Sitka Police went on to report that the school staff had received third hand information about the shooting and the report of a man with a gun.

    At no time was there a man with a gun on the school campus.
