Sitka, Alaska (KINY) - Dr. Mary Wegner will leave the position at the end of June.
Dr. Wegner spent six years on the job. She previously worked as Assistant Superintendent of Schools.
"The experience has been a wonderful journey. We have done amazing work to bring equity to our students. I'm proud of our accomplishments," she said.
Dr. Wegner said it is a very intense job that requires a lot of hours. She said she was not willing to put in those hours and intensity into the job.
"Sitka schools deserve someone willing to put in that effort and those hours."
The School Board agreed to remove her from the final two years of her contract.
They also decided to appoint an interim Superintendent for the 2020-2021 school year. Applicants for the interim position will be accepted until March 13.
Dr. Wegner plans to move to Juneau and spend more time with her grandchildren. She said she has left the door open for another position in education.
Wegner said there is competent staff on board who might apply for the job.
She said growing the cooperation with the Sitka Tribe of Alaska stand out as a highlight during her time in Sitka.
