Sitka herring sac roe fishery opens

Juneau, Alaska (KINY) - The Sitka herring sac roe fishery opened at 10:30 Saturday morning.

The Alaska Fish and Game Department in a release says the notice that the fishery is closed will be made via marine VHF radio.

The department determined that the opening would not harm a reasonable opportunity for participants in the subsistence fishery to harvest the amount of roe necessary for their uses.

Vessel surveys conducted by the department indicated that there is a large biomass of herring in the area from Watson Point to Halibut Point.
