Sitka, Alaska (KINY) - Taigud, Kolosh Island Area, Elovoi, Golf, and Gornoi Islands Area will be open for the commercial harvesting of geoducks, with varying regulations.
The Pacific geoduck is a species of very large saltwater clam.
The species is native to the coastal waters of the North Pacific Ocean from Alaska to Baja, California.
The following areas will be open for the commercial harvesting of geoducks for live sale from 6:00 am to 12:00 noon, each day from Saturday, August 6th to Tuesday, Aug. 9, 2022.
The areas have different regulations regarding pounds as follows.
The Taigud and Kolosh Islands Area will be open for a guideline harvest level of 8,400 pounds of whole geoducks.
While Elovoi, Golf, and the Gornoi Islands Area will be open for a guideline harvest level of 7,700 pounds of whole geoducks.
Divers are reminded that a permit holder may not harvest, land, or possess more than 1,000 pounds of whole and unshucked geoducks during any weekly fishing period.
As well, all geoducks harvested must be clearly labeled with the date of harvest, the harvester's name, and the location of harvest.
