Serious ideas for dealing with Lumberman under consideration

Juneau, Alaska (KINY) - The CBJ Docks and Harbors Department has solicited ideas for dealing with the derelict tug, the Lumberman, in Gastineau Channel.

Port Director Carl Uchytil said on Action Line that they are proceeding on a couple of serious ideas that involved scrapping the vessel or sinking it as a reef.

He says Harbormaster Dave Borg is drafting information for a request for proposal aimed at determining the level of contamination and what it would take to clean it up so it can be scuttled or brought on shore.

The vessel has been anchored on state-owned tidelands the last year. Uchytil says he has met with state officials, but the state chooses to monitor what they are doing.
