Sen. Murkowski works over weekend on Trump border plan

Washington, D.C. (KINY) - Sen. Lisa Murkowski spoke on the floor of the U.S. Senate on Saturday and made a statement about the proposed border wall funding.

Senator Lisa Murkowski is addressing a plan by President Trump to end the current partial government shutdown, fund border security and address immigration reform.

In a bid to break the shutdown stalemate, Trump on Saturday offered to extend temporary protections for young people brought to the U.S. illegally as children and those fleeing disaster zones in exchange for his long-promised border wall.

Murkowski spoke on the floor of the U.S. Senate on Saturday regarding the issue. In a press release from later in the day, Murkowski said she welcomes the President’s "decision to put an offer on the table and will review it in full once details are released."

"It has become clear that negotiations to this point have led us to an impasse, Murkowski said. "I will encourage my colleagues to do the same. The issues at our border and impasse over our immigration system weaken America but an indefinite government shutdown is equally damaging to our economy, our security and the well-being of the American people. This needs to end now."
