Search suspended for boater

    Sitka, Alaska (KINY) The US Coast Guard has ended a search for a missing Sitka man in Peril Strait.

    Sean Poffenbarger was on board a vessel that was located Sunday overturned.   The body of Sean Elliot, 49, of Sitka was found nearby on a beach in Goose Cove.  The distress call was reported Sunday afternoon.

    The search included a Coast Guard Air Station Sitka MH-60 helicopter crew, the crew of the Coast Guard Cutter John McCormick, a boatcrew from Coast Guard Aids to Navigation Team Sitka, a boatcrew from Alaska State Troopers and a group from Sitka Mountain Rescue. 

    The Sitka Police and Fire Department were also involved in the operation.

    Lt. Matthew Spado, command duty officer for Sector Juneau said their thoughts and prayers are with the family of Mr. Poffenbarger during this difficult time.  "We canvassed the water and adjacent shoreline in Peril Strait with air, boat and ground crews for two days to find the missing man."
