Search for missing boater

Sitka, Alaska (KINY) An emergency distress signal was received in Peril Strait Sunday afternoon.

The US Coast Guard said the missing boater is Sean Paffenbarger.  The search includes Alaska State Troopers and Sitka Mountain Rescue. The emergency distress signal was activated from an inReach device.

The Coast Guard Air State Sitka provided an MH-60 helicopter crew, the cutter John McCormick and an Aids to Navigation team boatcrew.  Troopers also provided a boatcrew for the search.

The vessel had been in transit between Sitka and Saook Point when the emergency distress signal was received by Watchstanders at the Coast Guard Sector Juneau.

After spotting a grounded 18-foot vessel located on Pogibshi Point matching the description of the vessel in distress, a rescue swimmer was dropped at the beach and aerial searches continued.
