Search Ends for Man Presumed Overboard on Cruise Ship in Sitka

    Juneau, AK (KINY) - The Coast Guard have announced that they have suspended the search for a man who went overboard on the 780-foot cruise ship Amsterdam in the Sitka Sound.

    Over 160-square miles were searched via a Air Station Sitka MH-60 Jayhawk Helicopter from the Sitka Sound, from Cape Ommaney to Biorka Island and surrounding waters. The Coast Guard were alerted late on Thursday night when a report came in that a man was missing after he did not show up for his shift. Extensive searches of the cruise ship were preformed, but there was no sign of the missing man.

    Commander Byron Hayes of Sector Juneau said that the Coast Guard have the deepest of condolences for the family of friends of the man.

    Weather was reported as 45-mph winds, low visibility, 7-10 foot seas, a water temperature of 55 degrees and an air temperature of 62 degrees.
