Schools to remain closed Tuesday, water pipe burst will keep Riverbend closed through Wednesday

Juneau School District Superintendent Dr. Bridget Weiss

Juneau, Alaska (KINY) - Juneau Schools will be closed again Tuesday in the wake of the winter storm over the weekend.

That was the word to News of the North from Superintendent Dr. Bridget Weiss Monday afternoon.   "We are going to hold off one more day and try to hope at least that our side roads get a little bit better than they are right now.  There's just absolutely no way we can get our buses to pick up kids or that kids can stand safely and wait for a bus.  So we're going to hold off one more day before we bring kids back."

Riverbend Elementary will be closed at least through Wednesday.  Dr. Weiss explained that a water pipe burst there over the weekend.  "We had a pretty significant water incident there that we have been dealing with so we're actually going to keep Riverbend students home on Wednesday as well while we continue to clean up there.

Tuesday evening's school board meeting will be conducted via Zoom instead of in person.
