Juneau, Alaska (KINY) - Eaglecrest Ski Area General Manager Dave Scanlan has just returned from a trip to Europe to inspect a gondola the City & Borough of Juneau is planning to purchase.
The gondola is currently located at the Galsterberg Ski Area resort in Austria. Scanlan says the gondola is in excellent condition.
"I just returned from our inspection trip," Scanlan said. "The gondola was in better condition than we even expected. It's a really fantastic machine [and] impeccably maintained. We got to look through all of the original construction drawings, lots of their records."
The outside engineering consultants will be a big help to the project, Scanlan says.
"We had an engineering consultant from SCJ Alliance along with us, providing an immense amount of technical expertise," Scanlan said. "They have the ability to do the complete retrofitted design and re-installation, and all the recommissioning and certifications to US standards. So it's great to have their knowledge base with us along on our inspection trip. Everyone was impressed with what we saw. We're still waiting for the full report, but that's not expected for another couple of weeks from our consultant."
According to Scanlan, a CBJ engineer also made the trip to Austria.
"We also had another one of our city engineers along with us, Alan Steffert from CBJ Engineering," Scanlan said. "He joined me to provide some extra in-house expertise, and was looking at foundation structures and all the components of the of the gondola."
