Residents in Haines gather to remember landslide victims

HAINES, Alaska (AP) — Residents have gathered in Haines to remember the two people killed by a landslide last year.

Anchorage TV station KTUU reports people gathered for a ceremony Saturday honoring kindergarten teacher Jenae Larson and David Simmons, who worked for an economic development organization.

Larson’s family is raising funds to build a school playground. Haines students are building benches in memory of both victims, whose bodies have not been recovered.

Torrential rains last December prompted landslides in the community.

Recovery efforts are expected to take up to a decade.

Studies are being compiled on the risks of another slide with final reports expected in the next few weeks.
