Relief for permit holders tops Docks and Harbors agenda

Juneau, Alaska (KINY) - An item on the agenda of the CBJ Docks and Harbors Board of Directors meeting Thursday is aimed at providing financial relief to permit holders

Port Director Carl Uchytil said on  Action Line that he'll be asking the board for its opinion on establishing the opportunity for local businesses who are permit holders to receive refunds.  "Some of our regulations indicate no refunds, but these are local companies that have spent upwards of tens of thousands of dollars for permits and they may not see a season at all."  He added that the department wants to be fair and wants the business community to thrive and they want to part of that solution.

Uchytil said this just begins the discussion.  It's not clear if his proposal would require Assembly approval.

The port director will also make a presentation to the board on the department's reservation policy.  Right now the first day of a reservation for small cruise ships is non-refundable.  So he said the question is whether they should relax the regulation and provide a refund if someone who makes a reservation that doesn't intend to sail.

The Docks and Harbors Board meeting convenes at 5 p.m. in Assembly Chambers at City Hall.

People wishing to listen in or testify are invited to call 789-2014.
