Recycling markets dry up for Sitka

Sitka, Alaska (KINY) The decision by China not to accept the world's trash has had an impact on Sitka.

Republic Services, who handles Sitka trash, informed the city that they can no longer accept many types of recyclable material, like plastic cups, plates, yogurt containers, and straws.  China announced last month that they would no longer accept 24  types of recyclable products effective January 1, 2018.

The company still can accept cardboard and some types of glass, aluminum, tin and plastic.

City officials said they are unsure how much their monthly rates will be affected by this change..
