Juneau, Alaska (KINY) - Rear Admiral Matthew T. Bell, the commander of the 17th Coast Guard District in Alaska is staying put.
The admiral was on schedule to transfer out but he recently received a call from the Commandant of the Coast Guard.
"The commandant called a couple of months back and provided me my orders, which is a third-year extension here in Juneau," RADM Bell said. "I think the commandant recognizes the importance of Alaska and the arctic and recognizes that there are some efforts that we're doing here in the state. He wants me to continue on with making those connections and making them especially in western Alaska, and northern Alaska as it approaches the arctic. The commandant wants me to continue those connections. And I'm already starting a rumor to ask for the fourth year."
Bell assumed the duties of Commander, 17th Coast Guard District in May 2018. He previously served in Washington, D.C., as well as numerous duty stations on the west and east coasts of the country.
