Public Works Committee works on winter shooting facility

Juneau, Alaska (KINY) - Skiing and rifle shooting are in demand in Juneau.

The Committee will refer to the Finance Committee's approval of a $30,000 grant to create a Biathlon Range for the Juneau Nordic Ski Club at the Montana Creek Natural Area.

The money would help alleviate parking congestion and also provide opportunities for grants.

The group has 550 members.  They would continue to groom and maintain the trails in the area.

The biathlon range would be next to the shooting range and contiguous to the current ski trails.

In the summertime, these trails could be used for biking, hiking, roller skiing and running.

The Pittman-Robertson Hunter Access provides grant funding of up to $1.5 million.  The grant requires a 25 percent non-federal match.

The CBJ could apply for the grant in April, 2021.

The facility would be owned by the CBJ and maintained by the Parks and Recreation Department.

The facility would include 10 shooting lanes and a 150-meter penalty loop area for shooters who miss a target.

The new trails could connect the penalty loop and the biathlon range to Montana Creek Road and Trail.  Future trails could connect to Spaulding Meadows and the Mendenhall Glacier Recreation Area.

The project would also include parking for an additional 20-30 cars and a safe spectator area.
