Public Works Committee recommends budget transfer for Centennial Hall

Juneau, Alaska (KINY) - The CBJ Assembly Public Works and Facilities Committee voted 3-1 to recommend approval of a $500,000 budget transfer to finish the design work on renovations planned for Centennial Hall.

Assemblymember Carole Triem was the dissenting vote.  She said she did not support taking money from pool projects to fund other projects.

The committee voted to recommend taking $250,000 from a roof project at Mount Jumbo gymnasium and $55,000 for pool improvements at Augustus Brown and the Zach Gordon Youth Center and use the money for Centennial Hall.

Voters last year authorized the city to take on $7 million in debt for Centennial Hall improvements.

They also approved a 2% increase to the local hotel bed tax for the next 15 years.

While the tax was expected to raise $440,000 annually, it's unlikely to meet that figure in 2020 due to the pandemic and the drop in hotel and motel visitors in the borough.
