Juneau, Alaska (KINY) - The Juneau Economic Development Council and the Juneau Chamber of Commerce are working on a plan to get $800,000 of the two million dollar donation from Norwegian Cruise Lines for the benefit of local businesses.
Council Executive Director Brian Holst talked said on Action Line that the boards of both organizations have had discussions. "The spirit of the donation as we understand it from NCL towards the chamber and JEDC is to assist businesses most adversely impacted by COVID-19. So that's what we're coming up with is a design for a program that focuses on those businesses most hurt here in 2021 because there have been relief programs last year for businesses that were really impacted in 2020."
Holst added the program is still being designed. "It's only $800,000. It doesn't go super far when you start spreading it among businesses, but the idea is to assist those businesses that were especially hard hurt by the lack of cruise ship passengers."
The Juneau Community Foundation will administer $1 Million dollars of the cruise line donation.
The balance includes $100,000 to the Sealaska Heritage Institute's arts park downtown; $50,000 for the Centennial Hall renovation, and $50,000 for renovation of the Catholic church downtown.
